As the form of community service, Department FPT conducts laboratory services includes:
- Wood identification
- Measurement of wood physical properties (moisture content, specific gravity / density, dimensional change)
- Measurement of wood mechanical properties (static, compressive, shear, tensile, hardness)
- Observation of wood anatomy (sample preparation, cell proportions, digital photography through polarized light microscopy, cell dimensions)
- Determination of general chemical properties of wood (extractive content, holocellulose, cellulose, lignin, ash, pentosan, 1% NaOH solubility, starch)
- Determination of extractives (total phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, flavanols, anti-oxidants)
- Manufacturing of charcoal, briquettes and liquid smoke
- Energu characteristic testing (calorificvalue, volatiles, fixed carbon, methylene blue absorbtion)
- Leaves distillation for essential oils
- Quality testing of essential oils (cineole content, specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation, solubility in alcohol)
- Particles and powder making
- Manufacturing of particle boards, fiber boards, cement boards, and laminate boards
- Planer work and board/ wood cutting
- Testing of gluing product quality (thick development, water absorption, internal bonding, formaldehyde emissions, wettability)
- Cooking pulp, determining the yield, and making sheets of paper (grinding, refining, pressing)
- Testing of kappa pulp numbers and physical / strength properties of sheet paper
- Preservation with pressure and immersion tanks
Remarks: some tests are not mentioned above can be further asked to the Department FPT or contact persons in each related laboratory.
In addition to those the laboratory testings, Department FPT also provides training or workshop on wood properties or processing as well as and welcomes visits from various institutions.
