This lab teaches the student with an integrated study on basic and application comprising forest products chemical conversion related fields such as wood/non-wood chemistry, oils and exudates processing, pulp and paper technology as well as biomass energy. This lab is composed by three sub-laboratories :
- Lab of Wood Chemistry and Fiber
The basis of wood chemistry lies in understanding the chemistry of cell wall components (polysaccharides, lignin, extractives, and inorganic constituents). For its application, the researches on pulp and paper technology are also conducted, mainly on the characterization of raw materials for pulp and paper production.
Wood extraction by soxhlet apparatus – Separation of extractive components by column chromatography
Analysis with a spectrophotometer UV-Vis & GC-MS
Pulping and paper making units at the Klebengan Service Unit
Kappa number measurement on pulp and tensile strength of paper sheets test
- Laboratory of Non-Wood Forest Products
This lab aims at the chemical investigation regarding non-wood forest products from plants. Research concerning exudates, oils, dyes, edible mushrooms, and liquid smokes are conducted in detail and widely. Research are also conducted on end-product processing as well as their bioactivities for dealing with various issues in green-environment.
Distillation of leaves to obtain essential oils and seed hot-press to obtain fatty oils
Quality testing of essential oils
Research on the effect of pine sap stimulant on several stands in Central Java
- Laboratory of Biomass Energy
The researches of this lab at chemically analyzing energy properties of various biomass materials, focusing on charcoal, briquettes, and pellets. Extra attention is devoted to the bioethanol production from forest biomass.
Pyrolysis unit and ashing furnace
Calorific value measurement with a calorimeter bomb
Hot pressing unit
Bioethanol research from wood powder
